There is so much to see and do in Cumbria, you will find there just aren't enough hours in the day or days in the week. You can potter around charming Lakeland towns and villages, explore the history of the area at its castles and historical houses, enjoy the great variety of attractions or have some fun at the many events taking place all year round. Whatever the weather, there is something for everyone.

The Lake District is considered by many to be the most beautiful part of England. There is something for everyone here and the scenery is the most breathtaking in the country.

pooley bridge
Pooley Bridge Pier Ullswater

Ullswater is the second-longest of the Cumbrian lakes (and the closest to Laurel House). Popular paths wind their way along both sides of the lake or, if you prefer to spend your time on rather than beside the water, steamers can be boarded and rowing boats hired. There are also spectacular mountains on offer; Helvellyn can be climbed from the village of Glenridding, whilst on the far side of the lake, the remote valley of Martindale offers access to an expanse of seldom-walked fells, where your main company will be the sheep and the skylarks.

Castlerigg
Castlerigg stone circle Keswick

Keswick on Derwentwater and the Northern Lakes covers one half of the Lake District National Park. This is the perfect area to choose equally for gentle relaxation or for an action packed family adventure holiday with lots of activities and attractions.

Carlisle Castle
Carlisle Castle

Carlisle Castle is situated in the historic city of Carlisle, Cumbria in England. The castle is over 900 years old and has taken part in many historical episodes in British history. Given the proximity of Carlisle to the border between England and Scotland, it has been the centre of many wars and invasions. Today the castle is managed by English Heritage and is open to the public. The castle until recently was the administrative headquarters of the former King's Own Royal Border Regiment now county headquarters to the Duke of Lancasters Regiment and a museum to the regiment is within the castle walls.
